waf. Skatepark Completion - March 2024

waf. Skatepark Completion - March 2024

Why are we building the Skatepark?

PRAY 4 US

waf. is the leading skateboarding brand in Nigeria, West Africa. Since our inception, we have been committed to cultivating and amplifying the skate community. This dedication has kept us going for over a decade and fueled all our projects thus far. With over 200 active skaters in Nigeria and other key cities in Africa, we are contributing to advancing the journey of skateboarding on the continent.

We aim to grow the culture of skateboarding by supporting skateboarders and building skate parks in and around Lagos, and eventually extending to other parts of Africa.

The story of skating in Nigeria must continue!

waf. Skatepark is the first concrete state-of-the-art skate facility in Nigeria aimed at creating a dedicated, family friendly space for expression and youth development.

The unique culture and relevance of skateboarding in Africa is largely understated. By partnering with Freedom Park, Nmbello Studio, Wonders Around the World, Studio Contra, Salad Days and Brightside Construction, we aim to amplify the power of skateboarding in Africa and its growing influence on the global skate and streetwear community.

The construction of this 800 square meter Skatepark will be funded with your help.

Why March 2024?

Our construction partners, Wonders Around The World, would be completing a Togolese project in January and have scheduled the waf. Skatepark project for March 2024.

If we don't meet up with the project for this time frame, we will miss out on the opportunity to work with volunteers from Wonders Around The World.

We support the kids

The $60,000 + we’re looking to raise will be used ENTIRELY for the funding of the skate park. Thereafter, all additional funds will be channeled towards summer and after school training programmes for the community.

What makes our Skatepark unique?

Measuring 800 square feet, waf. Skatepark is the first concrete, family friendly skate park offering skate programmes and facilities for all, especially youth. This Skatepark will be housed in the historical Freedom Park. It will provide the following:

  • After school programmes
  • Club house
  • Coffee shop
  • Group and one on one classes
  • Girls only skating

The narrative of skate culture is often told from the Western point of view. We’re constructing this Skatepark because it is important for Africa's skate culture to be advanced. Given the right environment and guidance, a new generation of passionate African skateboarders can be discovered and nurtured. We have a unique, indigenous community of skaters that deserve to be preserved and fortified.

We draw inspiration from the unique experiences of African skaters in Nigeria, Ethiopia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Ghana, Botswana and more.

Key into the vision by making a pledge!

Why $60,000?

The waf. Skatepark is a collaborative effort. We insist that all materials and facilities are of the highest quality and are constructed in line with the highest ethical and sustainability standards.

The waf. Skatepark is not solely about creating a physical structure but about taking a step in the direction of reshaping the narrative surrounding skateboarding in Nigeria and Africa at large.

All the funds raised will be allocated to construction and marketing

How do we make it happen?

We are ready to play our part in promoting African narratives on a world class level. We've pulled together the best team of African and European led companies to ensure the waf. Skatepark is a success. In addition, we have PR and social media backing from our friends and partners across the world. Our official social media platforms will also continue to promote this project relentlessly.

But we need your help!

The Building Timeline

-End of November orders for the exclusive Tees and stickers are processed.

- Beginning of January construction continues

- End of February finalization of The Skatepark.

- End of March we officially launch The waf. Skatepark!

The waf. skatepark has been in the works for four years and we are close to the finish line. To prevent the project from dragging out any further, we are giving it the final push it needs to ensure completion before the rainy season next year.

We are working tirelessly with our partners to guarantee that our deadline for the end of March 2024 is met. In early 2022, we started building retaining walls, cutting and replanting trees and many other necessary preparations to provide a soft landing for our construction team, Wonders Around The World

Ethics

At waf. we are dedicated to creating and maintaining a safe space and inclusive community for individuals of all ages, genders and orientations. Our team is made up of diverse people from all walks of life. We believe in being the change we want to see and we do so by welcoming everyone with open arms.

All our materials are ethically sourced and produced locally whenever we can in an effort to strengthen the Nigerian communities which we are a part of. We ensure that 70% of our production is done with materials sourced from Nigeria. Furthermore, we play our own part in preserving the environment by upcycling materials, working with local African fabric and limiting our import and plastic use to the barest minimum.

Acknowledgements

To our skaters, photographers, writers, designers, friends and partners; without you there is no waf. see you in March 2024!
